Matteo Porotto, PhD

Inventor

Dr. Matteo Porotto received his graduate education in molecular biology at the University of Genoa, Italy, and postdoctoral training in virology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.  He is currently an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in Microbiology & Immunology, with tenure, and Associate Director, Center for Host-Pathogen Interaction, at Columbia University Medical Center. Previously he was an Associate Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. His work is focused on mechanisms of enveloped viral entry and strategies to prevent infection, with a particular focus on measles virus infections of the central nervous system. He has recently turned his antiviral efforts to lethal viruses including Ebola, and since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has been working on antiviral approaches for this virus. He has been continuously NIH funded for over 10 years. He serves as a reviewer for numerous virology and broader science journals. He serves on several NIH grant review committees, including Topics in Biology of Infectious Diseases Agents, Drug Resistance and Drug Discovery, and as the chairperson for the Topics in Microbial Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Research review panel.
